A STM (short term missions) according to CCWM is implemented with the purpose of taking the Gospel (the message of Christ life, death and resurrection, forgiveness of sin and life abundant) in both proclamation and demonstration.
A healthy STM will be designed in collaboration with the local missionaries and will be developed as a learning/growth opportunity for those participating. The aim is to assist the missionary in ways the locals and the missionary themself are unable to do without assistance from a team. This may be unpacked in various capacities from financial giving, medical related, team building with the missionaries staff, teaching, VBS and camp creating and implementing, simply being with the missionary at work AND more.
Mission Tourism - Can be defined as attending a mission trip where the participant is invited solely to bring a western eye to the ministry in order to gain financial support. In this case the participant may be asked to do a task the local can already perform on their own in order to give the participant an act of service with their time in country. In this instance the participant may be taking away work from someone in country who could easily execute the task. The participant feels more like they are in a well oiled machine of service rather than in a situation where both the missionary, the participant and the people in country are experiencing God at work in all three.
It is our aim at CCWM to avoid mission tourism and set our goal on Short Term Mission.

Short-term Missions have earned their reputation in many cases as being a waste of time and even unhelpful to the missionary. This is unfortunate as we at CCWM see STM as an effective arm of the sending responsibility we have to our missionaries.
With proper training and equipping, a short-term team can be very effective to assist the missionary and their family in community building and engagement with those back home. This is a necessary part of sending, to not forget those we have sent.
A short-term team can bring skill to the missionary that they do not possess and that perhaps those in the missionary’s community do not posses. In some cases, this skill can be taught and utilized in years to come.
A STM can be spiritually provisional in ways the missionary has not yet been able to achieve. If a short-term trip takes the time to prepare themselves spiritually they are open to hearing God in new ways and this can serve to encourage the missionary and strengthen the overall ministry.
These are just a few of the ways a STM can be effective to the missionary and those the participants will serve in country.
STMs are also affective for those participating as they are open to learning and seeing God’s world and God’s people in new ways they may not have experienced before. Short term missions connect us to the body of Christ in nations we have not yet gone to. STMs teach us about ourselves and our ability to learn and grow in our faith and in our personal habits.
-
Yes.
As mentioned above in the previous questions, short-term trips can be very detrimental to the missionary, the participant and the people in country if done without thought, consideration and prayer.
A STM must be spirit led and done in humility.
A STM that is a missions tourism trip is highly detrimental to the community the participant it aims to serve.
At CCWM we believe that STMs are a connection to the body of Christ and that done in collaboration with the missionary and be highly effective in bringing powerful Gospel transformation to the participant, the missionary and the in country people we serve.
-
Yes, if you are planning to attend a mission tourism trip.
No, if you are planning to attend a STM that has been collaborated with the missionary, led by those who are full of God’s Spirit, ready to learn and grow, eager to connect with the larger body of Christ.
In many cases, if not all, money does not solve the problem. God built us for community and the aim of CCWM is to bring willing participants to meet with, collaborate with, learn from and grow with our on field missionaries and those they have gone to serve.

Our Amazon Basin, Bolivia STM is a Level 2 trip. While we can not guarantee it will be safe or easy, there is guaranteed significant physical stress. You will be stretched with possible outdoor sleeping, outdoor bathrooms, roughing it without running water. There will be a considerable amount of walking and hiking on a level 2 STM. Significant stresses we can not control include heat / high level of humidity and mosquitoes. We do not recommend this trip for those with mobility restrictions or strong aversion/low tolerance to the elements of nature. Keep in mind, your tolerance level affects an entire team. Do not sign up for this STM if you are not able to “take one for the team.”
